The Columbia | Market Pulse | December 2019

There are few condo communities in Washington as unique as the Columbia Residences. The former Columbia Hospital for Women was founded in 1866 in Thomas Circle, and relocated to the West End a decade later. It was rebuilt in 1912, with stunning Italianate architecture courtesy Nathan S. Wyeth who also designed the West Wing of the White House. The hospital finally closed its doors in 2002, before reopening in 2006 as luxury condos with ground floor retail, including a new Trader Joe’s market.

There were no new listings in December. However, there are still multiple available residences. These include Unit #210 which is priced at $800,000. The handsome apartment features 2-bedrooms, 2-baths and 1,375 square feet of living space. Classic hardwood strip floors run throughout the entire unit. The open gourmet kitchen has granite counters, Viking and Sub-Zero stainless steel appliances, Poggenpohl cabinets and hanging pendant lighting over the breakfast bar. Bonus points for the giant walk-in closet, washer and dryer, plus parking and two climate-controlled storage spaces!

Unit #708 is available for $639,000. The top-floor 1-bedroom, 1-bath apartment has 735 square feet of living space along with pale blonde hardwood floors, an office nook and fantastic open kitchen with salt and pepper granite counters plus Sub-Zero and Viking appliances. There’s a sliding wood and glass door to the bedroom, plus plantation shutters, a balcony, dual-entry marble bath, parking, storage and new Bosch/Carrier HVAC.

Unit #335 had expired but is now active again. The 1-bedroom, 1-bath floorplan also includes a den, with 850 square feet of living space. Listed at $619,900, the open space residence has hardwood wide-plank floors throughout, a gourmet kitchen with Poggenpohl cabinets, black granite counters and stainless steel appliances, plus a remodeled bathroom and a balcony off the bedroom suite.

Unit #417 features a loft bedroom and 1-bath. The 804 square foot residence is listed at $599,000 and offers 11-foot ceilings, a large open living area and gleaming hardwood floors. A modern open kitchen is set into a single wall and augmented by black granite counters, stainless steel appliances and an island with hanging pendant lights. Deep-set windows and unique architectural details add to the appeal.

Unit #428 listed in November, went under contract in December and is scheduled to close in January. The 2-bedroom, 1-bath residence with 894 square feet of space, is located in the historic main building and features a loft-style den, lovely wood floors, soaring 12-foot ceilings and deep-set windows with southern views. Listed at $725,000, the condo also boasts an open chef’s kitchen with Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, tons of closet space and a modern dual entry bath with a huge frameless shower and a twin sink vanity.

There was once closing in December. Unit #433 with 1-bedroom, 1-bath and a den, listed for $599,000, dropped to $575,000 and subsequently sold for $544,000. The light and airy 800 square foot residence features blonde hardwood floors, a large balcony and a modern open kitchen with dark granite counters, a Viking range and Sub-Zero fridge.

There are amenities aplenty at the Columbia, including a rooftop swimming pool, a state-of-the-art fitness center, billiards room, club room and three furnished guest suites. Add to that, a dry cleaners, an Urban Boxing location and the previously mentioned Trader Joe’s, right there on the condominium property! You can bet this place is popular with West End locals, as well as those actually living on the historic grounds.
