The Columbia | Market Pulse | May 2020

The Columbia Residences is one of Washington’s most unique and visually striking condominium communities. It was originally the Columbia Hospital for Women, located first in Thomas Circle in 1866 and dedicated to serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital moved to the West End neighborhood in 1876 and was completely rebuilt in 1912, with a stunning design from famed architect Nathan Wyeth. In 2006, the hospital closed its doors, and was subsequently restored and renovated as luxury properties. Also on the grounds is a Trader Joe’s market!

There were multiple new listings in May, starting with Unit #405 with an asking price of $1,105,000. The fourth floor apartment has two bedrooms two baths and a 1,316 square foot floorplan. The open living area is complemented by a large window bay that allows plenty of sun to bathe the blonde hardwood floors. A large master bedroom with en-suite bath, a balcony with lovely city views and an open gourmet kitchen with black granite counters, and Sub-Zero, Viking and Bosch appliances, adds to the allure.

Also new in May is Unit #237, priced at $929,000. The two bedroom, two bath residence has 1,163 square feet of living space and an open layout with east-facing windows. Although it listed just last month, Unit #534 has already had two price cuts. The one bedroom, one bath plus den apartment originally listed at $639,000 before dropping to $609,000 and then $599,000. Classic strip hardwood floors run throughout the living area and the oversized bedroom with its walk-in closet and dual entry marble bath. The den is big enough to use as a second bedroom. Also of note is the gourmet kitchen with Poggenpohl cabinets, a handsome pantry with sliding door, and Sub-Zero, Viking and Bosch stainless steel appliances.

There was one closing in May. Unit #441 listed for $1,320,000 and sold for $1,200,000. The two bedroom flat with two full baths has 1,405 square feet of living space, with Brazilian wide-plank hardwood floors throughout. Tray ceilings add a dramatic touch, while a beautiful open kitchen features white granite counters, white brick backsplash, white Poggenpohl cabinets, stainless steel appliances and hanging pendant lighting over the breakfast bar.

In addition to its very own Trader Joe’s, the Columbia has lots more to offer. Residents enjoy a rooftop swimming pool, three furnished guest suites for visitors, a fitness center, front desk and concierge service, a club room, billiards room, a dry cleaners and an Urban Boxing location. The repurposing from hospital to condo community has certainly been a success!
