The Columbia is a condominium community with a unique history; it used to be a women’s hospital! Founded in Thomas Circle in 1866, the Columbia Hospital for Women was dedicated to serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital moved to the West End neighborhood in 1876, and was rebuilt a decade later with a striking Italianate design from Nathan C. Wyeth. The hospital remained open until 2006, when it closed, renovated and expanded as luxury condos. The property is also home to a Trader Joe’s.
