The Columbia | Market Pulse | November 2020

History meets modern luxury at The Columbia Residences in the popular West End neighborhood. The former Columbia Hospital for Women dates back to the Civil War era, and was initially located in Thomas Circle. It relocated to the West End in 1876 and was rebuilt a decade later with a stunning Italianate design from Nathan C. Wyeth. The enduring facility finally closed after 136 years of dedicated service, and was redeveloped as beautiful condos that combine old school charm with contemporary style. Among the many amenities is a ground floor Trader Joe’s.

New to the market in November is Unit #240 with a particularly spacious floorplan. Listed at $1,645,000, the three-bedroom, 2.5-bath ground floor apartment boasts nearly 2,000 square feet of living space, with French doors opening onto a private slate patio and lawn area. Two bedrooms have gorgeous en-suite baths, while the third bedroom is currently used as an office with custom built-ins and two work spaces. The living/dining area is exceptionally large and bright, with an open gourmet kitchen featuring granite counters and stainless steel Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, including a wine fridge.

Offered at $950,000, the condo has dark wood floors throughout the kitchen and living area, with carpet in the bedrooms. The open kitchen has granite countertops, a Viking gas range, Viking wine cooler and Sub-Zero fridge. Eat at the island, or take your meals out onto a large private balcony! Nicely appointed bathrooms, a washer/dryer combo, one parking space and one storage unit add to the appeal.

Unit #242 rounds out listings in November that are still active as of this writing. The signature open kitchen has all the bells and whistles, including dark granite counters, island and hanging pendant lights. French doors open to a private patio overlooking a courtyard.

Still available is Unit #636. The two-bedroom, two-bath apartment overlooking 24th Street is priced at $1,129,000, after a $60,000 drop in October. The 1,267 square foot layout includes a formal entry and foyer, with richly-hued mahogany hardwood floors leading into a large main living area with a wide window bay. The open chef’s kitchen has dark granite counters, cocoa-toned cabinets, a Viking range and Sub-Zero fridge. Walk-in closets, luxurious baths and a private balcony add to the appeal.

Listed at $895,000, Unit #237 has two bedrooms, two baths and 1,163 square feet of living space. This apartment exudes architectural charm with thick crown molding and a sunny window bay. The open kitchen has cabinets that match the floors, plus dark granite counters and island, hanging pendant lights, and Viking and Sub-Zero appliances. The master bath has a twin sink vanity, frameless shower and separate soaking tub. There’s a cute balcony off the living area and underground parking.

Competitively priced at $595,000, Unit #309 presents an intriguing option at the Columbia. The one-bedroom, one-bath dwelling has 755 square feet of living space, with gleaming blonde hardwoods throughout the main living area with its completely open kitchen. You can cook away with stainless steel Viking, Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances, and sit at the granite island/bar for breakfast. There’s also a fun little balcony off the bedroom.

Unit #242 has been withdrawn. The sunny two-bedroom apartment with two baths and 1,107 square feet of space had been listed at $899,900. Blonde hardwoods are in the main living areas, with French doors leading out to a courtyard. A handsome open kitchen is set into one corner with dark granite counters and high-end appliances.

Unit #700 is now pending with an asking price of $3,000,000. “The Belvedare” is described as the crown jewel of the Columbia: a penthouse at the center of the original building, presenting 3,880 square feet of living space and 1,900 square feet of private exterior space spread over four separate areas. The front terrace with its distinctive Tuscan columns, along with flanking towers, are integral parts of the building’s façade. The residence is in unfinished condition, with a closing slated for December.

The amenities at The Columbia are impressive indeed, with a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, fitness center, billiards and club rooms, front desk and concierge, and three furnished guest suites for visitors. As mentioned at the top, an on-site Trader Joe’s provides the ultimate in grocery convenience. There’s also an Urban Boxing on the grounds. From timeless architecture to a terrific location, this is a very attractive place to live.
