The Columbia | Market Pulse | May 2021

The Columbia Hospital for Women and Lying-in Asylum was first opened in 1866 at the site of the former Hill Mansion in Thomas Circle. At a time when medical care was scarce for females, the facility provided critical resources. It moved to the West End neighborhood just four years later and was rebuilt in 1875 with a stunning Italianate design. The hospital endured until 2002 when it finally closed its doors, reopening in 2006 in a renovated version as The Columbia Residences. The popular condos merge Old World charm with modern luxury—there’s even a Trader Joe’s on campus!
