The Columbia | Market Pulse | September 2019

The Columbia Residences enjoy quite the history. Originally located in Thomas Circle, the Columbia Hospital for Women opened its doors in 1866, serving wives and widows of Civil War soldiers. The hospital moved to its present West End location in 1876 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1912 as a much larger facility. The ornate Italianate design from architect Nathan C. Wyeth instantly made it one of DC’s most distinguished and recognizable landmarks. The hospital closed in 2002 and was restored and renovated as high end condos for sale. The complex also houses a Trader Joe’s—convenient indeed for residents.
