With a great location and a fascinating backstory, The Columbia Residences is one of DC’s most popular condo communities. It first opened in Thomas Circle in 1866, as The Columbia Hospital for Women and Laying-in Asylum. Founded for widows and female relatives of Civil War soldiers, the small facility moved to its present West End locale in 1870. It was rebuilt on a grand scale with Italianate design in 1916 and remained as DCs premiere health care facility for women until closing its doors in 2002 The complex was renovated, enlarged and converted to luxury condos for sale in 2010.
There were no new listings in November. There are still a few choice condos that remain active from previous months, however, starting with Unit #424. Offered at $675,000, the residence has a loft bedroom, one bath and 822 square feet of interior space. Ash-gray hardwood floors are in the living areas. A stylish Euro-style open gourmet kitchen is set into a single wall, with starburst lights over the charcoal granite island. The loft bedroom has an entire wall of built-ins. The condo also features a balcony and a high-end washer/dryer stack.
Unit #416 is still available with an asking price of $570,000. The one-bedroom, one-bath flat with 764 square feet of space is renovated, freshly painted, and boasts dramatic 10-foot ceilings. Most of the unit features blonde hardwood floors, with tasteful gray carpet in the loft bedroom. This apartment is in the original historic building and has loads of architectural charm, including deep-set windows. A cute balcony overlooks the inner courtyard. The open gourmet kitchen has upscale stainless steel appliances and granite countertops. A dining island adds to the convenience. Washer and dryer are included.
Unit #317 has been newly reduced in price, from $599,000 down to $579,000. The 850 square foot apartment with a loft bedroom and one bath offers high ceilings, a generous front foyer and a large and open combined living, cooking and dining space. An attractive kitchen is set into one wall, with modern cabinetry, dark granite counters, stainless steel appliances and a dining island that will seat four. Hardwood floors are in the living areas with carpet in the loft. A washer and dryer combo tuck neatly into a closet inside the bathroom with its granite counters and frameless shower.
Originally listed at $699,900, Unit #324 was later reduced by a full $50K to $649,900. The one-bedroom, one-bath residence has 816 square feet of living space, and a nice and airy layout. Gleaming blonde hardwood floors run through the apartment. The loft bedroom has double closets and a cutout at the top of one wall, allowing an ambient feel. The bathroom has a nice big frameless shower, and the open gourmet kitchen is set into one wall, with upscale stainless steel appliances, and pendant lighting over the dark granite island. A balcony overlooks the courtyard for extra appeal.
Unit #501 listed in October and went under agreement in November. The two-bedroom, two-bath updated condo with 1,200 square feet of living space is scheduled to close in January. The asking price was $949,999. Gorgeous wide-plank floors run throughout the residence. Other features include maple Poggenpohl cabinets, Viking and Sub-Zero appliances, marble baths, an in-unit washer and dryer, a giant walk-in closet with organizers and a large private balcony.
Also pending is Unit #331. The apartment offers 1,380 square feet of living space and had been listed at $1,050,000. It’s due to close in early December. The floorplan eschews the typical shoebox look by facing the gourmet kitchen with its Viking appliances, sideways from a deep corner alcove at the far end of the open space design. The result is very organic and homey feel. Features include two bedrooms, two baths and a large and lovely treetop terrace overlooking a courtyard.
There was one closing in November. Unit #808 is an impressive corner penthouse with two bedrooms, two baths, 1,175 square feet of interior space and a huge 700+ square foot private rooftop deck with cityscape views. The residence closed at its full asking price of $1,249,900. Dramatic hardwood floors, an open chef’s kitchen, giant windows, a huge living room and an adjacent dining room add to the appeal.
Unit #234 has been withdrawn. The apartment has one bedroom, an open den that makes a great work-from-home space, and one bath. The 812 square foot flat with its wide-plank floors had been competitively priced at $590,000 but found no takers. The open chef-inspired kitchen features granite counters, Poggenpohl cabinetry and upscale stainless steel appliances, including a Viking gas range. The sellers are the original owners; we’ll keep tabs on this one to see if it comes back to market.
There are plenty of amenities at The Columbia, but the one that gets the most attention is an on-site Trader Joe’s—imagine just ducking downstairs for groceries! There’s also a staffed front desk and concierge with dedicated and friendly service, as well as a rooftop swimming pool and lounge, a fitness center, billiards and club rooms, and three furnished guest suites for visitors.
