The Columbia | Market Pulse | February 2020

The Columbia Residences is an impressive condominium adaptation of the former Columbia Hospital for Women. The hospital was founded in 1866 in Thomas Circle, moving to its present West End location a decade later. It was rebuilt in 1916 with a distinctive Italianate Renaissance design from noted architect Nathan S. Wyeth. The well-known women’s hospital ultimately closed in 2002 and was subsequently renovated and transformed into luxury condos with ground floor retail including a new Trader Joe’s market.

There were no new listings at the Columbia in February. The most expensive available residence is Unit #240 at $1,999,900. The roomy corner apartment has 2-bedrooms, 2.5-baths and 1,915 square feet of living space with sun exposure on three sides. The result is a bright and inviting city home with a large main living area, gleaming hardwood floors and a rare outdoor patio. A beautiful open kitchen is tucked away in the corner, while both bedrooms boast luxurious en-suite marble baths. There is also a den, plus two reserved parking spaces and four climate-controlled storage lockers!

Unit #441 has been reduced to $1,399,000. The 2-bedroom, 2-bath flat has 1,405 square feet of space, with striking Brazilian wide-plank hardwood floors throughout. The living area features a dramatic tray ceiling, while the adjacent open chef’s kitchen is both elegant and unobtrusive. An office area is another nice bonus, as are ornate French doors leading to a private balcony with unobstructed southwest views. Lovely marble baths, two private parking spaces and a climate controlled storage add to the appeal.

There’s a sliding wood and glass door to the bedroom, plus plantation shutters, a balcony, dual-entry marble bath, parking, storage and new Bosch/Carrier HVAC installed by a Professional heating repair and installation company.

Unit #532 closed in February on an REO sale for $814,000. The unique 2-bedroom, 2-bath “split model” has 1,250 square feet of living space plus a balcony. Gleaming hardwood floors run throughout, with bedrooms on opposite sides, an angled entry and a centrally positioned open gourmet kitchen with granite counters and stainless steel appliances. The flat was on the market for just 11 days before going under contract.

Unit #417 has now expired. The 804 square foot residence has a loft bedroom, 1-bath, 11-foot ceilings and richly hued hardwood floors. A modern open kitchen is set into a single wall and augmented by black granite counters, stainless steel appliances and an island with hanging pendant lights. Deep-set windows and unique architectural details add to the appeal.

There’s plenty of amenities for those living at the Columbia. Included is a rooftop swimming pool, a state of the art fitness center, front desk and concierge, club room, billiards room and three fully furnished guest suites. Also on site is a Trader Joe’s market, a dry cleaners and an Urban Boxing location. From the ornate historic architecture combined with new upscale interiors, to its prime location in the popular West End neighborhood, this former women’s hospital has a lot to offer!
